The tire pressure warning light comes on the dashboard of your Citroën C5 Aircross, sometimes just after a visit to the air station. However, the pressure is correct, but the warning persists. This discrepancy between reality and what the monitoring system displays comes from a specific mechanism that needs to be understood before making any adjustments.
Indirect TPMS on C5 Aircross: why the warning light doesn’t turn off by itself
The C5 Aircross uses, depending on the version, an indirect TPMS system. This system does not directly measure the air pressure in each tire. It analyzes the rotation speed of the wheels via the ABS/ESP sensors.
When a tire loses pressure, its diameter slightly decreases. It then rotates a bit faster than the others. The control unit detects this discrepancy and triggers the alert.
The problem is that this system works by comparing with a reference profile recorded during the last reset. If you inflate your tires without restarting the calibration procedure, the control unit continues to compare with the old profile. The warning light stays on, even if the actual pressure is perfect.
This is why you need to reset the tire pressure on C5 Aircross after each inflation adjustment, each wheel swap, or each tire change.
Check the pressure before any sensor reset
Before starting the procedure on the dashboard screen, a preliminary step conditions everything else: all four tires must be at the correct pressure.
Have you noticed a sticker on the inner door frame of the driver’s side? This is where Citroën indicates the reference values. They vary depending on the vehicle load (normal driving or full load) and the size of the mounted tires.
Always inflate the tires when cold, that is, after at least two hours of standing still or less than three kilometers driven. Heat expands the air and distorts the measurement. If you have just driven, wait for the tires to cool down.
Check all four wheels, including the one you think is correct. A minimal difference between two tires on the same axle is enough to keep the alert active after the reset.
Tire pressure reset procedure via the touchscreen
Once all four tires are properly inflated, get inside and turn on the ignition without starting the engine. The dashboard lights up, and the central touchscreen becomes accessible.
Here’s how to proceed:
- On the central screen, tap the icon representing a car (sometimes called “vehicle menu” or “vehicle settings” depending on the multimedia system version).
- Navigate to the section dedicated to tire pressure. It is usually found in the “Driving” or “Safety” submenu.
- Select the tire pressure reset option. A confirmation message appears to validate the reset.
- Confirm. The system then records a new reference profile based on the current wheel rotation.
On some older versions of the C5 Aircross, the reset is done via a physical button located under the instrument cluster, not through the touchscreen. The owner’s manual specifies which path corresponds to your model year.
When the warning light persists after the procedure
The light does not always turn off immediately. Sometimes you need to drive a few kilometers for the control unit to validate the new profile. As long as the comparison between the four wheels is not stabilized, the system remains in learning mode.
If after about ten kilometers the warning light stays on, two avenues to explore:
- A tire has a slow leak (faulty valve, nail, damaged sidewall). The system detects a real speed rotation discrepancy.
- The ABS sensor of one wheel is dirty or faulty. The indirect TPMS directly depends on these sensors. A faulty ABS sensor distorts the entire pressure monitoring.
- The reset procedure was not validated correctly (interruption of the ignition before confirmation, for example).
Regulatory obligation: a functional TPMS is not optional
Ignoring the pressure warning or disabling the system is not trivial. Since November 2014, every new passenger vehicle registered in the European Union must have a functioning TPMS. This requirement stems from EU Regulation No. 661/2009.
A C5 Aircross with the pressure warning light permanently on because the system is neutralized or faulty is technically non-compliant. During the technical inspection, an inactive TPMS can be noted as a defect, even if the tires are properly inflated.
Beyond the regulation, a deactivated monitoring system removes a safety net. A slow puncture detected early allows for intervention before the tire deteriorates irreversibly.
Reset after each seasonal change
Switching between summer and winter tires changes the diameter and composition of the rubber. The reference profile recorded for summer tires no longer corresponds to winter tires, and vice versa. Each change of tire type requires a new reset.
This also applies after a single tire replacement. If you change just one worn tire, the new one will have a slightly larger diameter than the other three. Without recalibration, the system will interpret this difference as a loss of pressure.
The tire pressure reset procedure on the C5 Aircross takes only a few seconds. Forgetting it after inflation or a wheel change leaves an active warning light that eventually gets ignored, including the day it signals a real problem.
